"The Postal Service, the military, the Federal Aviation Administration, Homeland Security, federal courts and the IRS (will STILL BE WORKING). So you will still get your mail, be safe and have to file your tax return by April 15th.
Some of the un-essentials that will be furloughed are the National Parks System, as well as parts of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Education Department and the Department of Housing and Urban Development. So this means those federal employees won't work or get paid until the shut down is over.
Now the most likely inconveniences you would experience are if you're applying for something from the federal government, like a passport, or for Medicare or unemployment benefits. You would experience major delays and if you filed your taxes by paper you'll probably get your refund a little later than you expected. But if you already receive federal benefits like Social Security or unemployment, you'll still get your checks."
