Iselin Gardens

Here's a photo of an amazing flower being grown in my neighbor's yard.  I just love these, don't you?  And they are so large - it's hard to get a scale here, but the flowers are huge, at least as big as a dinner plate!

School Board Elections ...
Coming Soon to a Polling Place near you...

I received this press release today:

(Woodbridge) - Ezio Tamburello and Dan Harris have announced they are running as a team in this year’s school board elections on November 6.

“I’m excited to be running for re-election and I know Dan Harris and I will work hard for the parents and students of Woodbridge Township” said Tamburello, who is currently Vice President of the Woodbridge Township School Board.  Harris is running as a first time candidate and believes he has the right stuff to be a Board member.

Dan Harris has been a long time community advocate and believes a Board member’s role in the budget process is critically important now more than ever. “With the annual school operating budget no longer part of the election process, the decision to elect the most effective Board members is of greater importance,” he said.

The candidates will announce their Moving Forward Agenda in the near future and will bring their message to the people via their website @ movingforwardteam.org.

Tamburello added, “Simply put, we vow that our decisions will make both academic and economic sense for our students and taxpayers”.

So, I guess the electioneering has begun.  I'm going to have to go back and do some research!

Woodbridge Concert Tonight:

FRIDAY MUSIC

One of the greatest things about living in Iselin, like I've always said, is how close you are to so many wonderful experiences. That was highlighted for me this past weekend, when my husband, son and I took a road trip to see the Firefly Festival in Dover, Delaware.

We are really pretty close to Dover, so it wasn't such a problem to spend the weekend there -- and we had a great time! The festival was held near Dover Nascar Track, and there was a casino right there too, so it's a nice destination.

And, also, it was interesting how many times a musician would come out and say to the crowd "Wow, I never played in Delaware before!" Imagine living in a state that you could never get to a concert nearby? I love living in Iselin, with easy access to concerts in NYC, the Meadowlands, Newark, and Philly!

So - for Friday Music - I'm putting up a video of my vacation last weekend :) I hope I don't bore you too much. It's really long. There are mostly snippets of lots of songs. BEST FESTIVAL EVER!!! Can't wait 'til next year! And, well, if you are bored, you can certainly just turn it off! So, here's my LONG VIDEO... I'd be glad to hear comments!

***

***

I didn't get to see ALL of the acts at the festival - you can only be in one place at a time, right? I also didn't video everything I did see. My battery wasn't unlimited, unfortunately, and ya know, when you are videotaping, you can't really sing or dance! The Killers did an AMAZING set - I think I sang and danced the whole time! - so I grabbed someone else's video off youtube:

***

***

And we also saw the Flaming Lips; we didn't video them either, but I know a lot of people like them. The show was really cool but they aren't one of our favorite groups. So here is a video from them:

Iselin's India Day Parade is On,
At least in Iselin!

Given the conflict between the Iselin and Edison Indian Organizations that wanted to hold a parade, I was curious about the status of the Iselin parade. So I contacted the Woodbridge's Director of Communications, John Hagerty. This is what he replied:
"The Township is not involved in the discussions between the groups. The Township issued a permit to the Indian Business Association, Inc. for the India Independence Day Parade in (the Iselin section of )Woodbridge (Oak Tree Road) for Sun., Aug. 12, 2012. Otherwise, the groups are working to come to terms."
So, it's on for August 12th, at least here in Iselin!

What's Up with Iselin's
India Independence Day Parade?

So I suppose you've seen the article on My Central Jersey.com, Here, about the India Independence Day parade's continuing split?  Apparently, according to the article, the Edison Town Council has denied the Iselin group's appeal of the Edison group's parade permit.

Hey, like anything else, there are always two sides (or more) to every story, and I only know what I've read in the paper.  As far as I know from reading the article, the Iselin group and the Edison group both want to hold the parade - the date in the article was given as August 12th.  Edison gave the permit to the Edison group.  The Iselin group wasn't happy about it and appealed.  The article didn't say anything about the Iselin part of the Oak Tree Road parade.

If I hear anything else, I'll let you know!

According to Wikipedia, India celebrates it's national Independence Day holiday on August 15th:
Celebration (include) Flag hoisting, parades, singing patriotic songs, speech by the Prime Minister, kite flying, singing the national anthem.
India celebrates Independence Day on 15 August to commemorate its independence from British rule and its birth as a sovereign nation on 15 August 1947.  India achieved independence after a struggle remarkable for largely peaceful nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience movement led by the Indian National Congress.

The Gardens at Correja

Iselin houses might not have acres of property, but the yards we have we turn into our own private oasis! Here is a great example... The Gardens at Correja!

There are a profusion of flowers and plants here, and plenty of beautiful  details to take in like statues and paths and things.  So much time is invested!  I know a garden takes lots of work, because I have a few of my own gardens to try to keep up with.

These gardens are the creation of Jerry Daily.  He has lived in Iselin all of his life, and graduated JFK in 1976.   I was very happy to get his email and these lovely photos.

If you have any photos of your own private backyard getaway,  send them to my email -- I would love to share them with everyone!

Now, can't you just imagine sitting here on a warm summer night, fireflies twinkling in the yard, with some cool tunes and a cold drink?

FOOTLOOSE is Wonderful!

I went to see Footloose last night, and I have to tell you, it was wonderful!  We have so many talented kids around here, don't we?  These actors and dancers and singers are amazingly talented, and I won't be at all surprised to find them on bigger Broadway stages someday in the future.

Footloose is the story of a Chicago boy who "can't stand still", and who is transplanted to a small Texas town.  Because of a tragedy, the town of Bomont has outlawed dancing - and the teens in town are ready to rebel once Ren is there to lead the way.  I remember seeing Footloose in the movies years ago, with Kevin Bacon as the lead character, and I remembered many of the songs as they were sung; you probably will recognize them too.  And I was so impressed by the entire cast and crew.  The characters were well acted and believable, the jokes were funny, and the songs were infectious.  It was all around a wonderful performance.

One of the best things about the performance was the dancing, and I'm not just saying that because my niece is a dancer... although yes, my niece is a FABULOUS dancer! But all of the performers were great.

You really should go see Footloose while you have the chance.  Tickets are available at the Box Office, while they last... go see it tonight!

The Theater at Woodbridge Middle School (525 Barron Ave., Woodbridge)
Shows start at 7:30 Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and at 2:00 on Sunday.  Doors open about an hour before the performance.  Tickets $15.00 each.
Box Office Hours are 5 - 7:15 PM.

More Iselin Gardens

I just love to look at the beautiful job landscaping this corner.  Yeah, I know, we should be seeing the Iselin Fair here this week.  But what's done is done.  And at least the homeowner on the one side is trying to make their yard as beautiful as the Noll Brothers make THEIR side of the street!

What can you do on a scorcher like today?

It's gonna be HOT again today!  A heat advisory remains in effect until 8 PM,  with "heat index values generally from 99 to 104 this afternoon"!!!  Plus, thunderstorms should be rolling through, any time from 1 or 2 o'clock on.  I HATE thunderstorms!  Although at least I don't have any big trees about to break at my house anymore - I feel better about that - I still worry about the lightening.  Do you?

So... What can you do on a day like today?  Well, personally, I plan on hitting the mall.

I've been reading a lot lately about how important exercise, like walking, is.  So I think I'll do the mall walking thing, in the AC at Woodbridge Center.  I was over there briefly yesterday, too, and let me tell you that the air conditioning felt good to me.  It wasn't TOO cold - they are conserving energy too - but it was very pleasant.  I'm gonna pick up my iced green tea at Starbucks, and stroll around and window shop.

While I'm walking I can check out all the sales.  Yesterday I saw hand towels for sale in Sears for like $1.99, which seems like a good price.  Plus, I can start thinking about my Christmas shopping.  I guess if you have kids it would be a good time to start "Back to School" shopping, but my kids are a little past that point now.

And if you don't feel like shopping, and you aren't into walking, they have plenty of nice seating areas to hang out at.

So maybe I'll see you there?

Iselin Gardens

I want to put up a lot of photos like this... there are SO MANY nicely landscaped yards and pretty gardens in Iselin. I love seeing what everyone has done to decorate their home. It lifts up the whole neighborhood, to see color and beauty as you drive by. So here is my Iselin Garden photo for today... if you have a garden or decoration or detail at your house that you would like to post, send me an email at iselin.home@yahoo.com and I would be happy to post it! Or, for that matter, just let me know where it is, and I can come take the picture myself! :)

Bus Driver Catching Child... Wow!

Did you see this video? Amazing! Two things I find just stunning about this video. Mainly, of course, that the hero of the story was in the right place at the right time and able to catch the 7 year old child; and, less important, but still interesting to me? That somebody got the whole thing on a cell phone video!

From what I read, the child is autistic and slipped out of the window and was standing or dancing on the air conditioner.

It's gonna be hot out!

Oh No! Yoan's Garden was robbed!

Did you hear about Yoan's Garden?  They got robbed!!!

Yoan's Garden is a GREAT chinese food place here in Iselin.  I always order my chinese food from them.  According to what I read in the Woodbridge Patch this morning, they were robbed last Sunday.  Videos show a white female robbing the place.

What a shame!!!  People work hard for their money, and I can't understand why anyone would be able to even consider breaking in somewhere and taking something that doesn't belong to them.  I guess with a video tape, the police will hopefully have an easier time of tracking down the thief.

And I guess that gives me an good excuse to order lunch out today.  I'm gonna support Yoan's Garden and get an order of beef and broccoli, and maybe some steamed dumplings -- how 'bout you?

Their restaurant review on Yelp.com gives them 4.5 stars with 7 reviews.  That seems pretty good, in my opinion.  You can read the reviews on Yelp, and you can also check out their menu.

Press Conference about the Woodbridge Apartment Fire

Woodbridge Township held a press conference this morning about the efforts underway to help the victims of the huge apartment fire.  As I posted before, the Colonia Corner is leading the efforts to help by collecting donations of decent new and used items.  They can be dropped off at the Woodbridge Community Center.

The families who have been displaced by this horrible fire are not the most well-off people to begin with.  Your donations are needed and appreciated.

The fire was bad enough to have the entire building condemned; it seems most likely that the families will have to just walk away from anything still in the building, as it is way too dangerous for anyone to enter.  I can't even imagine having something like that happen to me, can you?  Thoughts and prayers for everyone involved, and thanks to the Emergency Responders who put themselves on the front line to try to help.

ISELIN FAIR RIBS RECIPE!

There is a group on Facebook called the "Iselin Fair Timeline," which you can find HERE.    Everyone's pretty sad about the end of the Iselin Fair, and this has been very interesting reading, thanks to a lot of great contributions from Iselin people.  One of these contributions is the ORIGINAL RECIPE for the Iselin Fair Ribs!!  I can't wait to try it!! Thanks to Annamarie Jones for providing this.
Sure, there's no fair anymore... but you can make up your own official Iselin Fair Ribs using this recipe Of course, the quantities and things are written here for a LOT of ribs.  You'll have to experiment to figure out the proportions for yourself.
(And, of course, after you've tried making these ribs yourself, it shouldn't be hard to replicate the pizza -- deep fat fry the dough, pour on a little tomato gravy, some cheese -- you remember....)
Iselin Fair Ribs
Ingredients:
Ribs, Kosher Salt, Coarse ground black pepper, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder and white vinegar.
for every 4 racks of ribs you will need:
1 gallon white Vinegar
3 jars Paprika (total of 11 oz)
1 jar Onion Powder
1 jar Garlic Powder
1 1/2 cups salt
1 cup of ground Pepper

Trim loose fat from racks of Ribs, Soak in large pot covered with white vinegar for at least 2 hours

Remove ribs and place aside (save vinegar)

Mix ingredients thoroughly with hands to fine powder. Make sure there are no lumps.

Start adding used vinegar to powder, 3 cups to start. Mix with hands and add a little vinegar at a time until it's a mustard consistency.

Tub racks of ribs completely and lay in layers in large pot or pan until ready to grill. They can be left in the fridge up to 24 hours but leave at least 1 hour before grilling. (I always leave overnight.)

Cook for two hours, turning every 20 minutes until meat starts to draw back from the bone.

The sauce they used to serve with it is just ketchup and horseradish, to your taste.

It might be the day after the fourth, but it's never too late for fireworks.  Here is the video the Township put up on their website.

Oh - by the way - the fireworks start about 33 minutes in, just so ya know...
